The performance by string quartet will feature Lois Pfister and Ubalto Valli (violins) Emmanuel Sikora (viola) and James Weiss (cello). They will present the Adagio and Scherzando by Emmanuel Sikora that won the 2008 Composition Competition held by the Cultural Council of Cortland County. The Scherzando was recently performed at the NYSSMA All State Young Composers Concert in Rochester, NY. This will be the premiere performance of the Adagio. Emmanuel Sikora is a senior at Cortland High School.

The Cortland Area Flute Ensemble’s members are area high school, college, and community flute enthusiasts looking to perform flute ensemble repertoire. Our primary focus is to foster musical partnership and growth for flute enthusiasts through repertoire, performances, and other flute related opportunities.

The Cortland Area Flute Ensemble (CAFE) started out as a way for SUNY Cortland flute students to find an alternative ensemble to perform in. Gradually the ensemble added members from the community and local high schools. While there are only six regular members, the ensemble is always on the lookout for new flute players to join the ranks.

The CAFE holds weekly rehearsals at the Dowd Fine Arts Building on SUNY Cortland campus. Our partnership with SUNY Cortland’s Fine Arts Department has not only given us a reliable rehearsal location, but has provided us access to its limited musical library of flute ensemble repertoire. The Fine Arts Department also allows us to utilize the college’s alto flute for any rehearsals and performances that need it. The CAFE is looking to raise funds to purchase music and a bass flute to enhance the dynamics of the ensemble.

In the past, the CAFE has performed for the Blue Frog Coffeehouse and the SUNY Interfaith Chapel. The CAFE would like to do performances twice a year in the local Cortland Community. A performance goal of the CAFE is to challenge ourselves with the wide range of repertoire available. In addition, the CAFE hopes to bring music to those not able to come to our formal concerts. The CAFE would like to participate in local educational programs teaching about the flute family, flute music, and other unique concepts to our ensemble.
